Aplicacions científiques per Android. Física i Química amb tabletes i telèfons intel·ligents

Divendres passat vaig poder assistir a una de les sessions del Seminari Permanent de Física i Química (SPFQ) que cada any organitzen els companys i companyes del Centre de Documentació i Experimentació en Ciències (CDEC) de Catalunya. En la primera part, el professor José Martínez Gázquez, de la UAB ens va parlar de Los árabes y el paso de la ciencia griega al occidente medieval.

La segona part de la jornada va estar dedicada a les aplicacions (app) de física i de química per a tabletes i telèfons intel·ligents i la seva utilitat per l’estudi i, sobre tot, l’experimentació. Joan Cormines i Fina Guitart van presentar majoritàriament aplicacions per la química i Tavi Caselles i jo mateix apps encaminades més aviat a l’experimentació en física.

Resulta que Emilio Llorente ja havia presentat algunes altres apps en una sessió del seminari que es va fer després de Nadal relacionada amb les joguines que havien portat els reis, així que m’he pres la llibertat de replegar totes les propostes que entre uns i altres varem fer i relacionar-les a continuació.

Molts dels programes llistats són gratuïts o tenen una versió gratuïta, encara que alguns no, i s’indica el seu preu. N’hi ha molts i, per tant, la relació no és exhaustiva, encara que prou representativa. Les apps que es llisten són pel sistema Android, que és el més comú en les tabletes, encara que hi ha d’aplicacions similars per altres sistemes operatius en les seves botigues

Les apps treuen partit de les funcionalitats generals de les tabletes i telèfons, com són les de presentar informació visual i/o acústica, processar-la o calcular i, sobre tot, dels sensors que incorporen els aparells, el que fa que permeten mesurar diverses magnituds, com són la intensitat del camp magnètic, la declinació i inclinació magnètica (brúixola), distàncies i angles, angles d’inclinació, les vibracions (sismògraf), les acceleracions de l’aparell i de la gravetat, el nivell d’intensitat sonora (sonòmetre), la freqüència dels sons, la radiació gamma (comptador geiger), etc., en funció dels sensors de que disposi la tableta o el telèfon.

Mesurador de radioactivitat

Segurament la sensibilitat i la fiabilitat d’alguns dels sensors sigui baixa, però per fer unes mesures aproximades són un bon instrument. A més són els sensors més barats del mercat ja que venen de sèrie en els telèfons intel·ligents i estan a l’abast de bona part de l’alumnat.

He fet una classificació en funció del camp científic en el que són d’aplicació, encara que algunes poden utilitzar-se en diferents camps, o són de caràcter general i engloben varis, però m’ha semblat que aquesta presentació pot ser més útil que llistar-les en ordre alfabètic.

En cada cas indico possibles utilitats de l’app o experiències a realitzar amb els sensors de l’aparell. També afegeixo la descripció de l’app que fan els autors, que gairebé sempre està en anglès, ja que m’ha fet molta mandra el traduir-les.

Aplicacions de caràcter general per la física

Què permeten fer

Són aplicacions que accedeixen a tot els sensors que te l’aparell i permeten fer mesures directes amb tots ells. Unes apps, com l’Androsensor, monitoritzen els diversos sensors i mesuren simultàniament: localització, luxímetre, camp magnètic, orientació, proximitat, sonòmetre. Unes altres, com l’Smart Tools, són un conjunt d’apps cadascuna amb una utilitat.

AndroSensor

AndroSensor is the absolute all-in-one diagnostic tool that lets you know virtually everything about your device’s status.

AndroSensor supports all the sensors an android device can have and it will tell you which of them are not supported by your hardware.

View in a single screen the data from all device’s sensors in real time. Graphical and text output available for each sensor (graphical output not available for proximity, location and battery info)

– location, location provider, accuracy, altitude and speed

– Google maps to show the above info. Tapping on your location shows your address, postal code and location accuracy (if available)

androsensr

AndroSensor Log Collector

This app is a patch for AndroSensor . It is not a standalone app and it does not run alone. It only works with AndroSensor version 1.9.3 and later. “AndroSensor Log Collector” is an addon for AndroSensor. It enables the LogView feature in AndroSensor.

To use, open AndroSensor, press MENU and select Logs.

LogView prints out the last ~150 lines of the device system log file, as in logcat.

It also provides and option to save the log in your external memory/SD card, or even mail it as an attachment to anyone you wish.

Saving or mailing the log will give you access to the full log file (usually more than 4K lines).

The LogView requires READ_LOGS permission which is under “Personal Information” category. This is not looking to get your personal info. It’s just that the read logs permission is in the general category of “Personal Information” permissions.

This patch contains the required permission and the code to show the log file in AndroSensor. It doesn’t do anything if you don’t have AndroSensor installed.

Smart Tools is a complete package of 5 app sets. It includes 5 Pro sets for a total of 15 tools. In a word, All-in-One.

Mecànica

Què permeten fer

Mesurar l’acceleració lineal, centrípeta, etc de la tableta o el telèfon amb les aplicacions d’acceleròmetre. Tant Accelerometer monitor, com Physics toolbox accelerometer o MiLAB for Android permeten guardar les dades per exportar-les i analitzar-les en un programa d’anàlisi de dades i gràfics, com SciDavis.

MiLAB for Android és de la casa Fourier (la mateixa del Multilog i Multilab) i és una primera versió que només permet mesura l’acceleració, però que és possible que s’ampliï i millori en un futur.

El sensor d’acceleració de la tableta també es por utilitzar per detectar qualsevol vibració indicant el seu valor segons una escala de perillositat amb el Vibrómetro, per exemple

La combinació de diferents sensors també permeten mesurar distàncies i altures (Smart Measure, d’Smart Tools).

Accelerometer monitor

Dispositivos Android tiene un sensor acelerómetro. Es un sensor sensible que informa de las vibraciones del dispositivo. Esta herramienta es una herramienta poderosa medidor de vibraciones.

Physics toolbox accelerometer

This app measures and displays a graph of G-Force vs Time(s) that can be exported in an e-mail as a .txt attachment with comma separated values(csv). G-Force and acceleration measured in the x, y, and z dimensions are displayed separately on the graph, and the total vector sum is displayed digitally.

android.permission.WAKE_LOCK: Used to keep the device awake only when recording accelerometer data to csv. (Example: After pushing the record button, the app will continue to collect data even when placed in a pocket during a roller coaster ride, and will turn off only after data recording has been stopped.)

android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE: A csv file is created and modified on the phone’s internal memory.

Vibrómetro

Vibration Meter es la parte 4 del paquete Smart Tools (Sismógrafo, sismómetro, temblor del cuerpo). Con esta aplicación puedes medir la vibración del teléfono o un terremoto usando los sensores del teléfono, mostrando una referencia, como en un detector sísmico.

Los valores medidos se rigen por la escala de Intensidad de Mercalli Modificada (MMI). Si la medición no es precisa puedes calibrarla de forma de que el valor máximo esté sobre 10-11.

Smart Measure

Smart Measure es parte del paquete Smart Tools (Distancia, Altura).

Con esta aplicación puedes medir la distancia, la altura y el ancho de un objeto mediante trigonometría con tu teléfono.

Su uso es muy simple: simplemente levántate y pulsa el obturador. Un punto importante es dirigir la cámara al suelo, NO al objeto. (p.e. Para medir la distancia a alguien, apunta a sus zapatos )

Què permeten fer

Mesurar la freqüència d’un so o una nota musical amb les apps SpecScope, Spectrum Analyzer, bs-spectrum free i DaTuner. DatunerLite funciona molt bé amb freqüències baixes, diu la nota musical, el valor de la seva freqüència i el nivell de dB.

Mesurar la freqüència de ressonància de qualsevol cavitat i aprofitar per mesurar de la velocitat del so amb un tub d’assaig o una flauta dolça (SpecScope, Spectrum Analyzer, bs-spectrum free i DaTuner).

Mesurar els umbrals d’audició amb un altaveu i les apps Signal Generator o FuncGen, actuant de generadores de funcions. Signal Generator o FuncGen són generadors de funcions amb un rang de freqüències de l’àmbit de l’oïda humana. La sortida dels auriculars permet fer un ús individual o bé si es connecten a uns altaveus amb amplificador incorporat es pot fer simultàniament per a tota la classe. Es pot fer un escombratge de freqüències altes (fins a 20000Hz) i detectar així com augmenta la insensibilitat a les freqüències altes del professorat amb l’edat, mentre es manté inalterable any a any la de l’alumnat.

Mesurar el nivel d’intensitat sonora amb el Noise Meter que fa de sonòmetre donant els dB i fent mitjanes cada 10 segons.

Produir ressonàncies en tubs interferències constructives i destructives amb dos altaveus i les apps Signal Generator o FuncGen signal generator.

Produir un so d’una freqüència determinada per mostrar l’efecte Doppler. La variació de freqüència es pot mesurar amb un altre aparell.

DaTuner converts the fundamental frequency to the nearest note and error in cents for quick and easy tuning of your guitar, ukelele, violin, bass, cello, mandolin, piano, harp, saxophone, Ducati timing belt, harmonica, kazoo, you name it.

Signal Generator

Easy to use audio signal generator that creates white and pink noise as well as sine waves.

Test the bandwidth of your phone’s speaker (or your ears…), create true uncorrelated noise.

FuncGen signal generator

The Crescendo Systems function generator can be used to generate sine, triangle, square and non repeating noise signals.

Additionally these carrier signals can be AM, FM or PM modulated or swept in frequency. The modulations can be enabled on their own or in any combination.

The square and triangle signals have a duty-cycle that can be set from 1% to 99%.

Mesura del camp magnètic

Què permeten fer

Utilització del mòbil o la tableta com a brúixola (Brúixola d’Smart tools o Compass/Brújula) per comprovar que qualsevol objecte d’acer està magnetitzat (un radiador, per exemple).

Mesurar el camp magnètic terrestre (EMF sensor free), la declinació i la inclinació magnètica.

Mesurar a diferents distàncies la intensitat del camp magnètic creat per un imant (EMF sensor free, Andro sensor). Es pot comparar amb els valors obtinguts per una sonda de camp magnètic (Multilog). L’EMF Entity Sensor mesura el valor del camp magnètic en les tres direccions de l’espai i dóna el valor del mòdul.

Detectar metalls utilitzant les variacions del camp magnètic (Metal detector).

Compass/Brújula

Compass view with location display and geo-tagged notes lets you not only steer in the right direction, but view maps and keep notes of the places you visit.

EMF Sensor Free

Use the magnetic field sensor on your phone to take EMF readings. Works like a 3 axis EMF meter. Displays EMF in milli Gauss (mG) or micro Tesla (uT). Uses include ghost hunting, paranormal research, finding sources of EMF radiation, monitoring EMF levels, and/or curiosity. Instructions for use:

Preferences can be found by pressing the menu button. Many display options are available to customize what is on the screen.

The range on the meter can be changed in the options or by sliding your finger up or down on the screen. The left side of the screen adjusts the minimum, the right side adjusts the maximum. You can lock or unlock touch adjustments through the menu.

Custom color values can be set for the text. Sound can be enabled and customized in preferences, default is off. This will play a tone at a rate determined by the EMF reading, similar to a Geiger counter.

Metal Detector

Metal Detector is in the 3rd set of the Smart Tools collection.

This app measures magnetic field values using the magnetic sensor that is built into the phone. The magnetic field level (EMF) in nature is about 49μT(microtesla) or 490mG(milligauss); 1μT = 10mG. If there is any metal in the area, the strength of the magnetic field should increase. Among other uses, it can be helpful in finding electrical wires in walls and metal in the ground.

Usage is simple: Open this app on your device, and move it around; The magnetic field values will constantly fluctuate.

The accuracy depends entirely on the sensors in your device. Note that the magnetic sensor is affected by electronic equipment (TVs, PCs, etc.) due to electromagnetic waves. This is not a bug in the app.

Metal Sniffer / Metal Detector

This app detects nearby electromagnetic fields using the phone’s built-in magnetometer /compass. Depending on your phone, you can use it to detect metals up to 15cm away, and magnets from far, far away! Note that household equipment like TVs, and computers or even your phone case can affect readings.

Move the app around and read the measurements, if the magnetic field readings go over a critical level, the phone will vibrate, meaning a ferromagnetic material is nearby.

Detectar qualitativament, tant gràficament com de forma sonora l’existència de radiacions, per exemple de microones, indicant el nivell de perillositat. Si es posa davant de la porta d’un microones en funcionament el sensor de EMP detecta un fort increment i t’aconsella que et retiris del lloc.

EMP Detector

EMP Detector is using the sensor of smartphone to find electromagnetic wave. Especially, it analyzes wavelength of magnetism sensor to the way of originative algorithm.

I recommend that you check operation test nearby microwaves or other electronic equipments.

Mesura de la radiació gamma

Què permeten fer

Mesurar la radiació gamma natural (o de qualsevol font radioactiva de que es disposi) amb la càmera del mòbil i l’app Radioactivity Counter. Comparar els valors obtinguts amb el donats amb un aparell comptador geiger tradicional o les dades per la localitat del Consejo de seguridad nuclear.

GammaPixLite també és un detector de radiació gamma que adverteix que no dóna valors exactes, però sí serveix per a detectar-la. És lent en fer la mesura.

Ull!. La majoria d’apps que diuen mesurar la radioactivitat són simples joguines i no mesuren res.

Disclaimer: The type of radiation picked up by the camera can be dangerous/detrimental to the user’s health as well as cause damage to the device.

Its NOT a JOKE! The App is using the camera sensor to detect radiation, like a geiger mueller counter, of course with a smaller area. We tested several mobile phones at the Helmholtz research facility in Munich, using a professional radiation device in the range of 2-10 µGy/h till 1-10 Gy/h (CS137 and CO60). The CMOS sensors can detect primary gamma radiation and some higher beta radiation (depends on the shieldings in the mobile phone). Typically not going into saturation as most GM tubes.

GammaPixLite

The GammaPix(TM) Lite App, developed initially for several federal agencies, turns your phone into a detector of ionizing radiation. This isn’t one of those fake Geiger counters. The GammaPix technology has been successfully tested at independent labs with calibrated sources.

A 20-minute initialization is required before you use the application for the first time. We know this step slows you down, but it really is necessary to get the best results. Please perform this step in a place you know is likely to be free of excessive radioactivity.

For best results make sure no light is getting into the camera when you run the GammaPix Lite app. Putting the phone in your pocket or covering it with a book works well. A reading takes about 5 minutes if there’s no danger. Dangerous levels will be reported sooner.

Google Sky Map

This practical app lets you pinpoint the exact location of the stars, planets and other celestial objects in the night sky. Simply point your phone at the sky and you’ll see details of exactly what’s up there represented by a map in Google Sky Map.

As you move your phone around, the map moves with you to show what part of the Universe you’re pointed at. It does this using GPS, the internal compass, and the current date and time. Google Sky Map also has a manual mode that lets you explore the map with your finger rather than it auto-detecting the data based on where you’re pointing your phone.

Chemistry helper

A simple app designed as a quick reference for chemistry students. Includes a periodic table with links to wikipedia, a tool to calculate molecular masses of compounds (with a button at the top to perform simple grams/moles calculations, calculate mass percents and do stoichiometry with that compound), a table of polyatomic ions, constants, solubility rules, tools for calculating molarity and volume of solutions, tools for converting between units commonly used in chemistry, compound lookup that links to major chemical search engines (and wikipedia, of course), a table of reduction potentials, organic chemistry functional groups, IR, H1 NMR and C13 NMR spectroscopy tables and a table with common ligands.

ChemDoodle Mobile

ChemDoodle® Mobile is accessed with your ChemDoodle account that is provided to you for free when you purchase ChemDoodle desktop. You can use the Guest account to access this app without purchasing ChemDoodle, but you will not be able to save your drawings.

ChemDoodle Mobile is the Android companion to the popular chemical publishing desktop application, ChemDoodle. ChemDoodle Mobile is a calculator for drawn organic structures. There are four main windows: Draw, Calculate, Spectra and Help. The Draw window shows a typical ChemDoodle sketcher, where you can draw and store your structures and molecules. MolPad

  1. Bufff, cuanta faena! Y para tabletas, cual me recomiendas de Quimica que no sea de hacer disoluciones, que eso lo tengo aprobado.

    • Cualquiera de la dos calculadoras químicas que he indicado al final de la notícia (Chemistry Mobile Free o Chemical Equation Balancer) igualan ecuaciones químicas. La primera, Chemistry Mobile, es mucho más completa ya que también hace cálculos estequiométricos de las ecuaciones, cálculos con la ley de los gases perfectos, etc. i està en un español churrutero (si la tableta está en español).
